In the past week, there has been a significant increase in the number of infections with the coronavirus during leisure time in Austria. This is confirmed by the current epidemiological clarification of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES). 12.6 percent of all cases in which the source of infection could be clarified were attributable to this setting. In the first three weeks of December, the leisure sector had contributed six to eight percent to the incidence of infection.
Significant increases in infections also occurred in the hotel and catering sector after Christmas and around New Year’s Day. In the preceding weeks, between zero and 0.6 percent of all traceable infections occurred there – in the period from December 27 to January 2, the figure was 3.8 percent. At 76.1 percent, households continue to be the number one source of infection.
The proportion of cleared cases – with an overall increase in the number of infections compared to the previous two weeks – decreased significantly in calendar week 52. At 48.7 percent, it was below the 50 percent mark for the first time since the beginning of December, when an Austria-wide lockdown was in effect.
